MOSCOW, October 30 (Itar-Tass) -- Ecuador is ready to consider the possible recognition of independent Abkhazia and South Ossetia if such a request is made, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said on Friday.
“We did not discuss the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia with Russian officials. If the two regions apply to Ecuador for their recognition, we will consider their request,” he said.
The president lauded results of his Russian visit – the first since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
“I am satisfied with the negotiations. We have made significant progress in the development of the bilateral relations. The documents we have signed are also important,” he said.
The sides signed a declaration of strategic partnership and agreements on peaceful uses of atomic energy and customs cooperation.

“The lack of direct air traffic between Russia and Ecuador impeded the development of our relations. Direct flights may start in November and boost trade. In that case, prices on traded commodities will reduce 30-35%,” he said.
“Visa formalities for Ecuadorians visiting Russia will reduce in the near future. Meanwhile, Russians do not need Ecuadorian entry visas right now,” he said.
As for military-technical cooperation, the president said Ecuador would buy only trucks, ambulance vehicles and helicopters from Russia.
This is the last day of the Moscow visit of Correa paid at the invitation of President Dmitry Medvedev.
