Abkhazia Marks Victory and Independence Day

SUKHUM / AQW'A — Abkhazia today commemorates its most significant national holiday, Victory and Independence Day, marking 32 years since the conclusion of the 1992–1993 Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia.

The day began with a cycling marathon at 09:30, followed by a flower-laying ceremony at 10:00 at the Memorial to those who fell during the war, held at the Park of Glory in Sukhum. At 11:00, a ceremonial parade took place, accompanied by the “Immortal Regiment.” Later, wreaths were laid at the memorials of the first President of Abkhazia, Vladislav Ardzinba, in the village of Lower Eshera, and of the second President, Sergei Bagapsh, in the village of Dzhgyarda.

In the evening, celebrations continue with a festive concert featuring Abkhazian performers and creative ensembles at 18:30 on the Sukhum seafront, followed by fireworks at 20:00.

On 30 September 1993, after 413 days of intense conflict, the Abkhazian army reached the banks of the Ingur River and raised the Abkhazian flag, completing the liberation of the republic from Georgian State Council forces. The decisive battles for Sukhum in September 1993 sealed the outcome of the war, culminating in the full liberation of the country.

Victory and Independence Day is observed across all cities of Abkhazia. It remains both a moment of national pride and remembrance, as families honour the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for freedom.
