President Gunba Orders Creation of Commission Honouring Historian Stanislav Lakoba
State Commission to Preserve Legacy of Stanislav Lakoba to Be Formed in Abkhazia
SUKHUM / AQW'A — The President of Abkhazia, Badra Gunba, has announced that a State Commission will be created to commemorate the late historian and statesman Stanislav Lakoba and to preserve his scholarly legacy.
According to the presidential press service, President Gunba met with public figures Sokrat Dzhindzholia, Oleg Damenia and Valery Gurdzhua to discuss the initiative.
“Preserving the memory of such outstanding individuals and their contribution to the development of our country is an important state responsibility,” President Gunba said.
During the meeting, Lakoba’s colleagues and friends proposed forming a State Commission to honour his memory and ensure the continuation of his scientific work. President Gunba expressed full support for the idea, noting that he had met with Lakoba shortly before his death.

“I want to emphasise that the agreements we reached during that meeting will certainly be implemented,” he added. “A State Commission will soon be established to commemorate Stanislav Lakoba and preserve his academic legacy.”
Stanislav Lakoba, a distinguished historian, Caucasologist, and recipient of the “Akhdz-Apsha” Order (2nd Class), was one of the co-authors of the 1989 Lykhny Declaration and the textbook History of Abkhazia.
He tragically died on 20 September 2025 at the age of 73, after suffering a heart attack while driving in Sukhum. Lakoba is remembered as one of Abkhazia’s most influential scholars and public intellectuals.
