SUKHUM / AQW'A ― Saria Amichba, a distinguished linguist and an associate professor at Abkhazian State University, has passed away at the age of 89. The university community, including its administration, faculty, and students extends its heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family and friends.

Professor Amichba's remarkable career began at the Sukhum State Pedagogical Institute named after A.M. Gorky, continuing her legacy at the Abkhazian State University since 1964. An esteemed educator, she taught and developed comprehensive courses in General Linguistics, the History of Abkhaz and Abaza Languages, and Modern Abkhaz Language among others.

Her global influence was evident as she conducted educational sessions in multiple languages across cities like Makhachkala, Karachayevsk, and as far as Ankara, Istanbul, Inegol, and London, significantly impacting the Abkhaz-Abaza and Caucasian diasporas.

From 1989 to 1992, she chaired the Department of Abkhaz Studies, and from 1994 to 1997, led the foreign students' department at Abkhazian State University. She also advised on Abkhaz language policy to President Sergey Bagapsh from 2005 to 2011.

Her academic contributions include over 145 scientific works on linguo-culturology and linguo-folkloristics, enriching our understanding of the Abkhaz and Abaza cultures. Her profound legacy in classical folklore research and her influence on linguistic studies are deeply revered.
