SUKHUM / AQW'A ― On May 15-16, Sukhum hosted a series of educational workshops designed to support winemakers and viticulturists in Abkhazia. These sessions were organised by the FAO UN Project Office in collaboration with the Association of Winemakers and Viticulturists of Abkhazia. The workshops were led by Emilio Peiro, an international expert from Spain who has extensive knowledge of the local viticulture industry from his previous training sessions in the region.

About 30 local viticulturists attended the training, which focused on crucial spring-related topics. The first day of the workshop covered essential techniques for spring pruning, highlighting the best times for pruning, the necessary tools, and the correct methods to trim branches. This practice helps improve vine structure and yield while enhancing air circulation to prevent diseases.

Another key topic discussed was the setup and maintenance of trellises, which are vital for supporting grapevines. Peiro offered advice on selecting the right type of trellis for different vineyards and explained their benefits. Participants also learned about various fertilisers, their components, and the appropriate application rates, with a special focus on recognising nutrient deficiency symptoms.

During the second part of the training, Peiro provided a hands-on demonstration of pruning techniques and answered detailed questions from the participants. This practical approach allowed the attendees to observe and understand the application of these methods in real-world settings.“

These workshops provide a valuable platform for local viticulturists to share their agronomic practices and learn new, advanced techniques from international experts. In 2023, we successfully conducted five training sessions, and we plan to offer even more this year,” stated project manager Omar Dahduli.

The workshops were part of the "Sustainable Viticulture and Protection of Endemic Varieties in Abkhazia" project, implemented by the FAO UN Project Office and the Association of Winemakers and Viticulturists of Abkhazia.
