Ernest Chantre (13 January 1843, Lyon – 24 November 1924, Écully) was a distinguished French archaeologist and anthropologist. From 1878 to 1910, he served as an instructor of geology and anthropology at the Muséum de Lyon and also taught anthropology at the Faculté des Sciences in Lyon from 1881 to 1908. He held the position of editor for the journal Matériaux pour l'Histoire primitive et naturelle de l'Homme from 1873 to 1888.

Chantre was actively involved in numerous scientific expeditions across Asia Minor, North Africa, Armenia, and the Caucasus region from 1873 to 1913. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Société de géographie de Lyon in 1873 and the Société préhistorique française in 1904. Additionally, he was a member of the Société géologique de France starting in 1867 and the Société linnéenne de Lyon beginning in 1885. In recognition of his contributions to science, the African darter subspecies, Anhinga rufa chantrei, was named in his honour by ornithologist Émile Oustalet in 1882.
