A powerful earthquake that struck near the town of Gaziantep in south-eastern Turkey near the Syrian border in the early hours of Monday has claimed the lives of nearly 16,000 people and left thousands injured. The quake, which was followed by numerous aftershocks, including one that was nearly as intense as the initial shock, has caused widespread destruction in the affected area.
As rescue and recovery operations continue, the death toll is expected to rise further, highlighting the severity of the disaster and the urgent need for aid and support.
The window to save victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria is “fast running out”, the World Health Organisation’s regional director for Europe has said.
